Formal Mayor Lukes

Thank you for visiting my campaign website. It has been my privilege to work for you as Mayor of the City of Worcester. This website is designed to give you a brief overview of some of my accomplishments and ongoing projects as Mayor.

The next few years, like the last few, are going to be difficult for all of us because of declining tax revenues and our national economic downturn. I remain committed to keeping Worcester affordable for all of our citizens, and I will continue to be a staunch advocate for efficiency in government.
We should all be proud of what Worcester has been able to achieve through the efforts of so many in our community. In spite of the worst economy since the Great Depression, more than seventy new businesses opened their doors in Worcester during the last year alone. Worcester was ranked as the Ninth 'Most Livable City' by Forbes Magazine last year. We continue to become a destination for tourists thanks to our vibrant restaurant and emerging entertainment/arts scene; an accomplishment that was recently spotlighted on WCVB's show 'Chronicle.' Worcester is host to cultural events of all sorts, from our many ethnic festivals, to public art displays, to Broadway shows. In March, the DCU Center will be hosting the Tyson American Cup International gymnastics competition, to be aired nationally on NBC.

During my time serving as Mayor, I have built a strong working relationship with City Manager Michael V. O'Brien's administration. My office has worked closely with our numerous local non-profit organizations, educational institutions, and other public officials to collaborate in ongoing projects that will have long-term positive effects for the City of Worcester. As Chair of the Worcester School Committee, I have introduced reforms to the Worcester Public School system that have increased transparency in the budget, brought the sub-committee process into public view, and resulted in a real nation-wide search for a new Superintendent of Schools.

Worcester cannot afford a 'tax and spend' mentality from any of our elected officials, least of all from our Mayor. Worcester's Mayor needs to maintain independence from political power brokers in order to have the freedom to propose the cuts that will most likely be necessary over the next term. Worcester's Mayor needs to have experience in city government to understand the nuances of our budget. Worcester's Mayor needs to have a fiscally responsible philosophy in order to realize that we can't necessarily afford to pay for every 'good idea'.

I am the only candidate for Mayor who possesses all of these traits, and I humbly ask for your vote so that we can keep Worcester moving forward.
